GCSE topic:

Christianity is one religion, but there are different branches, or traditions, within it. Each branch has its own beliefs, practices, and ways of worship. The main branches are Roman Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox. Even though they are different, all Christians share the same central belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and the Saviour of humanity.

Roman Catholic Christians

Roman Catholicism is the oldest and largest branch of Christianity, with the Pope in Rome as its leader. Catholics place great importance on the authority of the Church and its traditions. They celebrate seven sacraments (special ceremonies), including baptism, confirmation, and holy communion. The Mass (Catholic worship service) is very structured, with prayers, Bible readings, and the sharing of bread and wine, which Catholics believe become the body and blood of Jesus.

Protestant Christians

Protestantism began in the 16th century during the Reformation, when people challenged the authority of the Catholic Church. Protestants emphasise having a personal relationship with God and believe the Bible is the main source of authority. There are many different Protestant denominations, such as the Church of England (Anglican), Baptist, Methodist, and Quaker. Their worship can look very different: some services are formal and traditional, while others are more simple and modern, with music and open prayer.

Orthodox Christians

The Orthodox Church is another ancient branch of Christianity, especially strong in Eastern Europe, Russia, and Greece. Orthodox Christians follow the teachings of the early Church Fathers and use beautiful, traditional forms of worship. Their services often include icons (religious images), incense, and chanting. Like Catholics, they celebrate sacraments such as baptism and communion, but with their own customs and traditions.

What Christians Share

Although these branches have different leaders, traditions, and styles of worship, they are all united by their faith in Jesus Christ. They believe he is the Son of God, who came to save humanity, and they look to his life and teachings as the foundation of their faith.
