The three Abrahamic religions are:

  • Judaism

  • Christianity

  • Islam

They are called “Abrahamic” because they all trace their beginnings back to Abraham, a man who lived in the Middle East around 1800 BCE. Abraham is seen as an important ancestor or role model of faith in all three religions.

Similarities between the Abrahamic religions
  • Trace their beginning back to Abraham
All three religions look to Abraham as the first person who showed great faith in one God. In Judaism, he is the father of the Jewish people. In Christianity, he is an example of faith that Christians should follow. In Islam, he is seen as a prophet who submitted to God’s will.

  • Belief in one God (monotheism)
Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all teach that there is only one God who created the world, cares for humanity, and wants people to live good lives. This is different from ancient religions that believed in many gods.

  • Importance of the city of Jerusalem
Jerusalem is a holy city for all three religions, but for different reasons:
    - For Jews, it is the site of the ancient Temple, where they believe God’s presence was especially strong.
    - For Christians, it is where Jesus was crucified and resurrected.
    - For Muslims, it is the place where the Prophet Muhammad is believed to have ascended to heaven during the Night Journey.
