Introduction

Prayer is an important practice in Christianity, providing a way for believers to (i) communicate with God and (ii) develop a personal relationship with God.

Answered prayers are seen as evidence of God's care for his followers.

The Nature of Prayer

Prayer can take various forms, including:

  • Confession - saying sorry to God for something you did wrong.

  • Adoration - praising God

  • Thanksgiving - thanking God for what he has provided

  • Supplication - asking for God’s help

Prayer can be practiced individually (privately) or communally (publicly).

The Lord's Prayer

Jesus taught his followers the Lord’s Prayer as a way to communicate with God, asking for help and showing respect. Jesus gave this prayer to his followers during the Sermon on the Mount, which is a famous teaching moment where he shared important lessons about living a good life. The prayer covers asking for daily needs, forgiveness, and protection from harm. It’s used in many Christian churches and helps believers focus on their relationship with God and how to live according to his teachings.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power,

and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.
