GCSE topic:

A fundamental belief of Christianity is Incarnation. This is the belief that around 2,000 years ago, God came to Earth as a human being who was called Jesus.

The Incarnation is the idea that God became human in the person of Jesus Christ. What this means is that Christians believe that Jesus was fully human and yet at the same time fully divine (God).

One of the most important Bible passages that relate to the Incarnation is found in John’s Gospel. John begins (chapter 1, verse 1),

  • In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

This passage asserts that the “Word” is God.

John continues,

  • The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.

Here John is making a clear connection between God and Jesus - they are one and the same: Jesus is the Word - he is God in human form (“made flesh”) and lived here on Earth.
