Towards the end of his ministry, Jesus experienced a very important event called the Transfiguration. This is described in the Gospels of Matthew 17, Mark 9, and Luke 9.
What happened?
Jesus took three of his closest disciples — Peter, James, and John — up a high mountain to pray. While there, something extraordinary happened:
Jesus’ appearance changed (he was transfigured).
His face shone like the sun and his clothes became dazzling white, showing his divine glory.
Suddenly, Moses and Elijah, two great figures from the Jewish scriptures, appeared and spoke with Jesus.
A bright cloud surrounded them, and a voice from the cloud declared:
“This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”
The disciples were terrified and fell to the ground, but Jesus comforted them. When they looked up again, Moses and Elijah were gone, and only Jesus remained.
Why Moses and Elijah?
Moses represented the Law (the Torah), as he received the Ten Commandments.
Elijah represented the Prophets, who reminded people of God’s will.
By standing alongside Jesus, they showed that he was the fulfilment of both the Law and the Prophets.
What does this event mean?
Reveals Jesus’ divine nature: The shining face and heavenly voice confirm Jesus is truly the Son of God.
Strengthens the disciples’ faith: Peter, James, and John saw with their own eyes who Jesus really was, which prepared them for the challenges ahead (especially his suffering and death).
Shows Jesus’ authority: The voice from heaven told the disciples to “Listen to him!” — meaning Jesus’ teachings carry God’s full authority.
Points to the resurrection: The dazzling transformation gave a glimpse of Jesus’ future glory after his resurrection.
Why is it important for Christians today?
It reassures Christians that Jesus is both fully human and fully divine.
It connects Jesus to the bigger story of the Bible (Law and Prophets).
It reminds believers that following Jesus leads to transformation and hope of eternal life.
