GCSE topic:

At around the age of 30, Jesus embarked on a new chapter in his life, which is his ministry. But before he could start sharing God’s message there were some important things he needed to do.

Baptism

The first important event in this part of his life was his baptism by John the Baptist. As Jesus was being baptised in the River Jordan, God’s words were heard. According to Matthew’s Gospel (chapter 3), God said,

  • This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Temptations

After his baptism, Jesus spent 40 days and nights in the desert to decide what direction to take his life. During this time he was tempted three times by the devil.

  1. The devil tempted him to turn stones into bread to satisfy his hunger. Jesus refused, saying that people need more than bread; they need God’s word.

  2. The devil took him to the top of the temple and told him to jump, saying angels would catch him. Jesus refused, saying not to test God.

  3. The devil offered him all the kingdoms of the world if Jesus would worship him. Jesus refused again, saying that he would worship only God.

Calling of the disciples

After resisting the devil, Jesus was ready to return to Galilee and start his teaching and gather his followers. In total twelve men were selected, named the Twelve Disciples:

Simon Peter | Andrew | James | John | Philip |  Bartholomew Thomas | Matthew | James | Thaddeus | Simon | Judas

The calling of the first two disciples, Simon Peter and Andrew is described in Matthew’s Gospel, chapter 4:

  • As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him.
